OSS implements two new programs in Orange Beach
Orange Beach, AL 8/20/2008 - This past weekend in Orange Beach the OSS teams WOWED the fans by using a heat race format that had the boats running nonstop for almost four hours. "This is a bold departure from where Offshore Racing got its roots, but we have to adapt with the times and realize that we are no longer staging races that run out of site of land. We race on a fan friendly track in front of the beach so why not institute a racing format that works in many other forms of motorsports", said OSS Chief Referee, Mike Tomlinson.
Orange Beach offers the perfect venue for this style of racing with the hot pits just inside the inlet and plenty of space at the docks. During the stop between heats, the teams were allowed to work on their boats, engines and even use the crane to go back on the trailer if needed. They were also allowed to move weight in the boat, but not add or remove any. They were restricted from adding or remove fuel.
During the first heats, four boats fell out of competition for one reason or another. A blower belt broke on Fury, a fuse blew on WHM and an impeller let go on Popeyes. With the help of Mercury Racing, all boats were fixed and returned to the race course for the second heat. It was a total success that will be repeated at the National Championship races in Lake of the Ozarks on September 26 - 28.
The new OSS Cares program kicked off its new program in Orange Beach. Several students from the Project Smile Program at Gulf Shores Middle and High Schools enjoyed a fun filled day at the Race Village, thanks to OSS Cares, the newly launched humanitarian arm of the Offshore Super Series. "We are so excited to have given these students - who show tremendous strength and courage in their daily lives – this once in a lifetime experience of seeing the powerboats and enjoying some one-on-one time with the teams", said Maisy Page, OSS Care Founder.
Next stop – September 26 – 28 in Lake of the Ozarks Missouri for the 2008 National Championship Races.
OSSCARES provided a weekend of fun for several OB families!
