VICTORY 1 QUICKEST IN FIRST PRACTICE

Friday, 23 May, BUDVA (Montenegro): Mohammed Al Marri showed all the qualities that carried him to the 2001 Class 1 World and the 2005 Class 1 Middle East titles, after setting the fastest time in today’s practice session with Nadir Bin Hendi in Victory 1.

Al Marri, back in the driver’s seat after a 15-month absence from Class 1 competition, to replace the injured defending Class 1 World and European Champion, Arif Al Zafeen, and Bin Hendi produced the best time of the afternoon on their sixth of seven laps, going quickest in 2m 29.75secs around the 4.06Nm course, over two seconds faster than rivals Qatar 95. "It is great that after spending very little time in the boat with Mohammed, we can go out and set the fastest time," said Nader Bin Hendi. "And I think with more time and trying different set-ups we can improve."

Behind Victory the Qatar boats enjoyed a close rivalry and exchanged times, with Qatar 95’s Matteo Nicolini and Abdullah Al-Sulaiti out pacing their team-mates, Sheikh Hassan and Steve Curtis in Qatar 96. "It was a good time. We have not done too much on the boat since the last race, just a small upgrade but it worked," said Nicolini. "The conditions were not bad, there is some big sea on the outside that makes you fly a little and you try to keep the boat in the water to keep the speed, and inside the bay it’s a little tight. But it’s a good circuit."

Despite being dropped to third quickest, Sheikh Hassan and Curtis, running their spare boat for the second consecutive race, but with their favoured Skema V12s, were satisfied with their time. "We’re getting there," said Curtis. "Today was more about dialing in the boat and trying different set-ups. We have some adjustments to make and I am sure we can improve on today’s times."

Pretty scary to see just 8 boats competing, and a shame to see the UK has now lost its only entrant.

Having said that looking back through Searace today, many UIM class one races in the '70's and '80's had less boats!

In fact one driver I was reading about, won 5 races without any boats to race against!

Funny how the memory always tells you about the good old days!

CLASS 1 WORLD POWERBOAT CHAMPIONSHIP
HYPO GROUP MONTENEGRIN GRAND PRIX, BUDVA, 23-25 MAY

24/05/2008
QATAR 96 ON POLE FOR MONTENEGRIN GRAND PRIX

Saturday, 24 May, BUDVA (Montenegro): Sheikh Hassan Bin Jabor Al-Thani and Steve Curtis will start tomorrow’s Hypo Group Montenegrin Grand Prix on Pole after a stunning qualifying lap in today’s Edox Pole Position in Budva.

Sheikh Hassan and Curtis needed just one lap in their Skema, V12-powered Qatar 96 to set the day’s best time of 2m 19.78s around the 4.06Nm lap at an average speed of 120.35mph/193.65 kmh, to win by just over a second from Dubai’s Victory 1, crewed by Mohammed Al Marri and Nadir bin Hendi.

The Victory duo – racing together for the first time in the absence of Bin Hendi’s regular partner, injured World and European Champion Arif Al Zafeen – posted their best time of 2m 21.37s on their second of three flying laps, with Jotun’s all-Norwegian pairing of Jorn Tandberg and Bjorge Jacobsen, third fastest in 2m 21.98s.

Today’s Pole Position was in stark contrast to Sheikh Hassan and Curtis’ last qualifying lap in Qatar two months ago, when they all but destroyed their race boat. But after weeks of intensive work on the spare boat, plus the addition of Skema, V12 engines, Sheikh Hassan and Curtis looked to be back at their best, and will start as marginal favourites to win the 23-lap, 93.83Nm Hypo Group Montenegrin Grand Prix being held off the coast of the Adriatic’s ‘Budvanska Rivijera’. "We’re pushing it to keep ahead of Victory but not overstepping the mark," said Curtis. "The guys have worked very hard to get the spare boat into this condition and it’s amazing what they have done in the time they’ve had."

Despite the frustration and disappointment at failing to outpace their arch rivals, Victory 1’s Nader Bin Hendi was confident that the race will be a different story. "The boat is perfect and Mohammed and I are working well together," said the Dubai throttleman. "I think we can go at least two seconds quicker and might have beaten Qatar’s time if we had had a clear run on our last lap. Whatever the conditions tomorrow we have a great chance to take the win."

While all eyes will be on the on-going rivalry between the teams from Qatar and Dubai, no one should overlook Jotun, following Jorn Tandberg’s and Bjorge Jacobsen impressive third place in qualifying. "It is a very good feeling to have the boat running well again," said Jorn Tandberg. "The difference in time between the top three is just over two seconds so I think this was a very good result for the team. I think it will be hard to find too much more speed in the same conditions, but if the sea is rough tomorrow it will suit the boat, which handles very well in rough conditions."

But 8 boats..... '70s and '80s with less boats.....

Remember the early '90s where there were more than 20 boats?
Very impressive to see for example on the Northsea like in Ostend....

Now only a handfull teams are left from British, Italian or Norwegian origin, and all the others are Arab or bought by the Arabs....

Have to say Pepe that I like your signature. It somehow reminds me of the licence plate on my car.
