Pole position runs on the 9th.
Should be very interesting to see who comes out fastest. One of the 3 Skaters or 2 Outerlimits? Maybe the Cigarette, Searex or Fountain. How about the Metamarine, the Italcraft or Chris Witty's mystery boat?
Since speeds in Evolution are unlimited this year it should be fun to see how fast these boats actually are.

Looks like one of the Metamarines (the old Fainplast) took pole honors.
Home PowerPole joy for #60 GFN Gibellato crew
Today
The crew of the #60 GFN Gibellato Evolution-class boat have secured the honour of first pick for their point in the pace boat line-up for this weekend’s Endurance and Sprint races of the Italian Grand Prix of the Sea. Pilot Marco Pennesi and throttleman Giampaolo Montavoci of the local San Benedetto-based team posted a time of 3m09.56s round the PowerPole course, pipping the British #69 Honeyparty.com crew by four seconds.
Winning the PowerPole allows a crew to choose where they line up behind the pace boat – this enables them to secure what they think is the most advantageous position for the run in to the green flag and the first marker buoy. The second-fastest team secure second pick for the position behind the pace boat and so on down the order.
In the SuperSport class, it was a case of home-town heroes again as the Italian #44 Conam Yachts Racing Project team of pilot Aaron Ciantar and throttleman Angelo Tedeschi took PowerPole honours beat the British-based #47 Silverline Buzzi Bullet crew with a lap time of 3m46.17s, just over two seconds faster than the #47 boat.

I understand that Fountain Worldwide didn't start because it has been held up in customs. They hope it gets there in time for tomorrow's race.

Well congrat's to Honey Party.
Looks like the #60 did not have his engines dyno'd so his position is uncertain.

The tell tell is the water was flat. A boat that big with Diesels in flat water must really be light for the power.

Agreed. The big Metamarines were never especially fast whenever I saw them run and God, are they big.
Our 30 Velocity raceboat was next to one in the pits at Cowes a couple of years ago and looked like its dinghy.

The Fantastic 1 Cigarette led early. Lucas Oil was in the lead most of the race and was overtaken on the last lap by the Fountain. Cranefields Searex hung in there and eventually took third.

The results are not posted very well on the P1 web site.
They do not break down the finishes and no results from the Evo class on their site.

Very unusual for P1. They typically post results very quickly. One can only guess that there may have been protests resulting from the navigation confusion early on in the race. A few years ago at yet another Cowes race (when I unwittingly found myself on the race jury) we were hearing protests until 11pm.
I found that if you click on the race itself, the results of the individual races are posted, unfortunately in reverse order!
Another oddity with the site. Very few pictures.

Both OLs were there. Centaurian Yachts (last years Lucas Oil OL) and Kiton OL (the new boat).
Kiton was running third in Saturday's race and broke its steering or a drive and spun out. Not really sure what happened to it yesterday.
Pics have been few and far between from P1.

They blew one of the 711 engines.
The cig looks just like the one JT ran before they cut the cockpit off.

It looks veery much a Cig in the front. Way narrower than a Skater. Same cockpit/decking as per Skater but the bottom is a Cig with the Skater mods.
I belive that Cig only finished the wiring and small stuff as Skater installed the engines/drive/rigging.

No reason why. I bet that being late the engines were not Dyno'd.
One would have thought that the protester would have had to finish the race to protest the results.

I'm confused. If as been suggested here and elsewhere that Fountain Worldwides engines were not dynoed resulting in a protest, why were the points only taken from the Sunday race. It would logically follow that Saturdays points be eliminated as well if this was the case.
Could it not have been a navigational infraction? I recall a lot of confusion at the beginning of the Sunday race where after a turn mark was taken that FW suddenly had a large lead over the rest of the fleet that seems to have taken the mark differently.
Maybe ForTwo can enlighten us when he checks in. Congratulation Gino on a fine 3rd place in your first Evolution race in the new boat. Was everybody OK after Sunday's spin?

Here's how David Sewell at World of Powerboats sees it.
P1 - ARE THEY HAVING A LAUGH ?
13th May. The winning team in the Evolution class 'Fountain Worldwide' have lost the 100 points because of a rule infringment relating to their engines. However we are told they are still the winners of the race. What about Niigel Hook and Shelley Jory in the second boat home 'Lucas Oil', surely they are the winners as 'Fountain Worldwide' has effectivally been DQ'd. The winner of Supersport 'Voom Voom' were promoted when the team that crossed the line first 'Conan Yachs' were docked 2 minutes for jumping the gun.

Thank you Ben,
indead there are some issues about FW, and everything will be scooped further on. Many people told us they missed a marker, not for us to say as we are not intitled or cant prove anything. There are a few more issues with I wont discus here in prublic... and hope you all understand this. The spinout happend because we had hydraulic failure on the steering... we could easely cut that corner even faster but it was 2 hard to hold after we took some air of the first wave and hit the second on a bad angle. Neverless it was a very good week-end and taste for more in where we hope to setlle some points in Marseille.

Fair enough. Guess we will see what P1 has to say.
Some not so nice comments over on OSO.
Onwards and upwards to the next race I guess.
I was trying to login to the live coverage whilst in Spain last weekend - gave up.
I want P1 to work as a fan of the sport.. but.....

The Evolution class reigning champion #99 Fountain Worldwide team – which won both the Endurance and Sprint race of the 2008 Powerboat P1 season-opener in San Benedetto del Tronto – has been docked its Sprint race win from Italy after a post-race protest by the #88 Kiton Outerlimits OSG Racing team.
Pilot James Sheppard and throttleman Craig Wilson started their season with a clear championship lead after their back-to-back wins, but a UIM Commission decided that the protest posted by the OSG Racing team was valid, and – after discussion by the UIM Jury – a decision was issued.
Although the #99 Fountain Worldwide team are allowed to keep their win in the Italian Grand Prix of the Sea Endurance race, they have been disqualified from the Sprint race and - as a result of the 100-point loss - have lost their cumulative Italian Grand Prix of the Sea victory and championship lead, both of which now go to the #77 Lucas Oil crew of pilot Shelley Jory and throttleman Nigel Hook.
The #99 Fountain Worldwide crew do have the option of protesting the penalty and have stated their intention to do so.
