Official Press Release
13th April 2008
Power on the water at Whitianga
Atrocious sea conditions caused carnage for the fleet in the Whitianga Offshore powerboat race yesterday, but for Tony Coleman and Wayne Valder it was a good omen. In their first season in the new Skater 36, Cure Kids, they dominated the race from the second lap and for the remainder of the shortened 8 lap race stretched their lead all the way to the finish.
For Peter Turner and Craig Archer it was not a good day and were unable to match the pace of both Cure Kids and Pro Floors driven by Wayne Valder and Ross Christensen. Pro Floors struggled with lack of instruments, bilge pumps and communications, but came home second for valuable season points.
In Superboat Lite there was also problems but this time it was the dominant Rayglass driven by Travis Thompson and Kelly Smith recorded their first DNF of the season with some bad hull de-lamination. Grant Smith and Dave Aldridge drove a challenging and calculated race in Addictive, and left their final sprint until the end of the last lap by passing race leader Gary Gleeson and Andrew Koolen just before the finish line. Bob Smith and Mark Taiatini had also had their turn at the front but recorded a DNF after breaking a drive shaft in one engine.
The next round will be held at Napier on 26th April.
