Here are P1's comments on the P1 boats competing at Key West
Mixed fortunes for P1 teams in Key West challenge
The annual UIM-sanctioned World Offshore Powerboat Championships, run under the Superboat International organisation, came to its conclusion in Key West yesterday (Sunday). There was a strong Powerboat P1 presence at the event with a number of European teams making the effort to cross the North Atlantic to compete in what is regarded as one of offshore racing's legendary venues.
The 'World Championships' took place throughout last week with three qualifying races, held on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. The first two races were shorter sprints, scoring half-points, whilst the final series of races on the final day were twice the distance and counted for full points. The accumulated points from each racing class determined the respective 'World Champions'.
There was tremendous interest from the American powerboat fraternity over the appearance of the newly-crowned Powerboat P1 Evolution Class World Champions, James Sheppard and Craig Wilson. Their King of Shaves-sponsored Fountain Worldwide had been shipped to the 'States immediately following the Portuguese Grand Prix of the Sea and, apart from the removal of some weight, was as it had competed in P1 with the Ilmor V10 Viper engines remaining untouched.
The team had taken the decision to enter the difficult Super Vee Unlimited class and found themselves up against boats with as much as double, if not more, their horsepower. They were hoping for reliability to win through. Despite their power handicap, the boat ran flawlessly all week and finished an impressive second in each of the three races. It was only beaten by the much larger works-Fountain 46', which has two 1500 HP supercharged Sterling V8s and can run at over 160mph.
A further two teams familiar to Powerboat P1, The Switch and Honeyparty.com, entered the Super Vee Unlimited class. A delay in customs for the Corsican-pairing of Eric Brotons and Bernard Albertini resulted in 'The Switch' arriving into Key West with only the final race left to compete in, whilst Honeyparty.com will be looking to put the event firmly behind them as they concentrate on building a challenge for the 2008 P1 title. The brand new Skater of Richard Carr and Paul Sinclair, powered by super-charged Chief V8 engines, experienced a number of small problems preventing the team from finding the right set-up. The boat spun-out in the opening race, resulting in Sinclair banging his crash helmet against the cockpit and losing consciousness for almost two minutes. Deciding not to compete in the second race, his place was taken by Team Manager Mark Pascoe. Even putting eight-time offshore powerboat racing World Champion, Steve Curtis MBE, in the cockpit on a test-run failed to solve their problems and the boat unfortunately did not start the final race.
Over in Super Vee, a class in which Lucas Oil-Outerlimits pilot Nigel Hook was the reigning World Champion (alongside James Sheppard), the US-domiciled Briton had elected at the last minute not to race his 2007 championship winning Skater, opting instead for the Outerlimits hull that is the 'sister' to the boat he raced in the 2007 Powerboat P1 World Championship. As in P1, Joe Sgro partnered Nigel in the sinister looking black 'Lucas Oil' boat but, having found it difficult to achieve the optimum set-up and speed to test the might of the factory supported Fountains, the pairing were unable to mount a challenge as podium contenders.

That OL was the last boat in the crowd, sorry, Race.
It looked so terrible I felt bad for them. Chine walking, slow and just a bad decision to race that boat.
Nigel should have raced his Skater.

To see a boat that was built to run Super Vee run in P-3, when other EX super vee boats run P-2 is bs in my opinion, it shows either lack of officials to make the boat run in the class it was built for, or a competitors lack of real racing against equal competition. sandbagging is not racing!

I think that the Dragon is just so bad that it has to run in P3 to be in a competitive class.
It's not a Fountain or Skater after all.

I thought the rules for P class were about running to a maximum average speed (and peak speed), which I'm sure we would all agree is not real racing anyway! Same BS we had to put up with here in P1
In any event ... :D ... means it's humour ... enough said!

They do Rupert, just not in the P (production) classes ... the speeds limits are to level the playing field in the P class
In the other classes, it's all out racing, albeit over short distances and long straights.

If that were the case shouldnt the dragon race SV??? The problem lies within the organzation not policeing or enforceing the rules they set into place for fear of losing boats. the dragon should be capable of running at least 105 mph with 525's and bravos. the fountains are running in P-2, Speed in P-3 is limited to 95 MPH.

If they are sticking to the rules whats the problem? If everyone has the opportunity then surely their isn't really too much of a problem as long as its to the rules?
I would have thought that Mike's boat could easily run in Evolution class over here in P1, however, there was still a lot of very interesting racing this season with it running SuperSport, is this not the same?
As long as the racing is interesting then surely it's good for the sport whatever they race in.

I don't disagree!!
However, without getting into who prefers what boat, as we all have our bias', if I was going to run in largely straight lines in largely flat water, I would race a Fountain ... because of the number of boats they build, the research Reggie puts into the hull to get them to go as fast as possible and the investment from Mercury. It's very hard for any of the smaller companies to compete with that, and realistically, a fountain will run 5mph+ faster than most other boats under the SV rules.
In rough water, I would put money on many other boats being competitve including outerlimits, Dragon and others.
Then for P Class, again, I don't disagree that he could run in P2 (or P3) ... down to him to choose the type of racing he wants tho and then manage his speed accordingly. Those are the rules, so the organisers did nothing wrong that I can see (only my opinion).
We were thinking of running this year with our boat, and we would have done P2 ... but we have #6 drives not Bravos like the other one. Just Gino's choice I guess.

P-Class racing here in the states is suppose to be entry level racing, and with allowing people to race in a class that the boat easily has no problem running or coompeteing in has a trickle down effect, there are a few mono hulls that are single motor that could run P-3 but dont because the bigger twin engine boats moved down a class, this puts a bunch of 90 mph boats in P-4, and the guys that could run P-4 move to P-5. Then they created a P-6 for single mono hulls under 25 ft, and they have engine builders building big HP motors that accelerate to 70 very quick, and that is there top speed. this gives the new entry level guy no chance at all to win. and thats not what P-class was intended to do.
