View Full Version : What to race next?

Actually quite difficult to decide - hopefully the Round Britain will come off but it so late in the day to be decided.

If not where to go - obviously has to be a boat of my design - but what class? Also I want competitive racing with good organisation

- 3C, have just completed a new design that is going into production. Will be supplying customer boats which makes racing against them difficult. Also been racing the class for too long and the British scene organisers do not inspire. Still a great class though and do have a very exciting trimaran designed.

- RIBs, even less happening in the UK

- 3D, would be great but the class has gone

- P1, need a big budget sponsor and would like to see the classes / organisers sort out some of their racing issues.

Ends up as a problem - no where to go and race!

Maybe time to race abroad??

If you raced in the US you could probably slot nicely into OSS Cat Outboard and SBI Superboat Stock.

Would be really good way to go.

Certainly planning on visiting the US next year and make a few contacts. Starting with the Miami show.

Design wise it would be great to work in the US. At the moment apart from UK - I have quiet a lot going on in Greece and China. Other possibles include Russia and Turkey - so would nice to go West for a change!

Even better if I could tie in some design work with racing etc.

well, i just wrote up a nice long description of all the design work that needs to be done to US classes, then i realized that i was giving away all my secrets and my possible livelyhood when i graduate so i deleted it. There is a lot of room for new designs over here though. WIth the exception of the 50 mystic, there isnt anything new or cutting edge. The 388 skater is the 2nd newest design, but i dont know how different that is from the 368. All the other classes could use some new blood. Of course if you want to hire me we could discuss my ideas more.

US it is then! Sounds like there is enough work for us both! :D

Actually think there is the opportunity for a lot of change in the future in various markets - really frustrating when you see some of the so limited progress that is being made and how difficult it is to get companies to take seriously R & D.

Apart from the race scene, there is so much to be done in increasing efficiency and reduce powers / fuel consumption (especially over here) in the cruiser / motor yacht market.

So many ideas - and not enough time!

Well said Adam,
You hit the nail on the head with this.

If it wasn't only in Turkey I would take the Class 3 225. I like the concept. With a overseable budget you can do serious racing. Unfortunately no races in western Europe.

Actually, the Mystic 50 was built before the Skater 388. The Mystic 50 is the Callan 50' under new ownership.

There are few other large cats coming into the American Market, Spectre 42', Doug Wright 38', Skater 42' etc..

I hear Outerlimits has a 50' cat now too!

Doug Wright's small cat has done very well in the OSS Cat Outboard class, and I assume the 38' is similar design to the Dragon 39 Vee which is also a Doug Wright design?

I agree!

The easiest thing to do would be to reinstate 3B and then also open up a national Class 3 225 series in the UK.

You then have a Class 3 series to suit everyone, as it once was.

The 39' Dragon that Mr. Berry makes was designed by Peter Hledin. (AKA Skater)

Mr. Hledin gave Mr. Berry the design for free and Mr. Wright took out a number of steps (when he cnc'd the tooling) and a great deal of speed in comparison to the 399 Skater.

OL is supposed to be coming out with a 40' Catamaran for the Miami boat show.

Hope it runs better than their 50' which Michael Peters designed. Maybe they should do like everyone else and splash a Skater too.

So Adam have you found a racing class to compete in yet??

Hi Daniel
Not really - but a few things are looking a bit more possible.

I may stillb e doing the Round Britain race in a Technohull 999 RIB - but not confirmed yet.

After that I hope to do the 3C Worlds in Guernsey in a new 7m Sportsboat that I have recently designed and is being built abroad - but ime is going to be tight on getting a boat ready.

After that the class I would really like to do is 3S / 6 litre - but going to take some money raising!

How about yourself - how is 3C looking in the Scandinavian countries? Are many looking at coming to Guernsey?

The 6 litre cats are really nice especially the Doug Wright I love that design!!

There are about 10 boats in Sweden, I think it’s about 3-4 boats in Finland (maybe Marcus can give us info) and Norway has about 10 boats as well.

The rumour here says that Thomas Wrenkler and Thomas Rosen is going to Guernsey both in hydrocats.

I will be interested to see how 3B goes as well now that 115 hp will be allowed.

Do you think this will boost numbers?

Seems to be some interest in the UK gain - but we also have OCR racing with a similar class and K Class which was started for kids racing but has now developed to a 115 hp class with I think Phantom 16's.

Too many classes / organisations over here and not enough talking to each other!

3B is starting to die here in Sweden only 4-5 boats competing. Very sad because it’s a great class.

OCR racing that’s like circuit racing with offshore boats right??

In Finland we have about 6-7 c class boats and about 5 in B class and one team is competing in the Turkish 225 series

I have plans of going to Guernsey also,it has become more of a tradition to spend a few weeks in september racing abroad...usually a bit warmer and probably less rain than in Guernsey but anyway... :)

Yes - OCR races short courses - 1 to 2 mile laps, but on open water. Hulls are meant to be production boats and various rules to restrict this. They have a 140hp class and a 115hp class.

Really entertaining racing - but struggling to get enough boats racing.

Adam Younger

I could actually get quite interested in racing 3B with the 115hp engines.

Yes I would like to race bigger boats but would have to be sponsored. Otherwise I really just want to do a few races a year, preferably internationals and travel a bit. I also want to try some new design exercises with race boats -so in many ways the 3B class ticks a lot of boxes.

Maybe.....;)
Don´t they have an old 26f mould stuck some where in their back yard ?Or has Penttis dogs eate them up:D
But to much work for them to have it stepped and fitted with a new deck.
Good luck with your new boat Marcus !
Waiting for a posting of a pic here on Proprider;)
Is it a 25f ?
