In a couple of years time, I understand that the UIM Class 3 will have to run 4stroke engines.
*
I am really interested in your ideas / views on how the boats will perform.
*
To get the "ball rolling" i noticed that the 4 stroke substitute Yamaha for class 3B is 50 kg heavier and plus 10 hp.
*
Having raced one or two 3B boats I know that 50 kilos can cost an Argo Cat 17' with a Yamaha 90hp (2 Stroke) at least 8 km, and cause balance issues.
*
Look forward to your thoughts.

Not at all - they will have to run 'clean' engines though.

Still other options - E-Tec being the obvious one. Don't know where Merc are going with Opti-Max in the long run? Have heard of other research into clean 2 strokes fro mother manufacturers as well.

Think we are still very much in the transition period with engines an there could be a few surprises ahead. It may be that the rules / classes have to change to suit in the future.

Whatever - it would be good if a clear way ahead was visable. Racing is struggling enough and not having good engine options is not helping.

Interestingly, we ran two of the first Optimax's on our RIB (6 years ago now!!) and apart from the "idiot proof" engine management system, they were very good. More reliable and much cheaper to run than the old XR2.

Many of the Class III 2-litre boats run with these now too with very little loss of speed (although there is less that can be "tuned" with them too).

The last I checked, these engines (Optimax) were good for some time under the UIM rules

Racing at Cowes?

Hi Ben
Only just found out about the site - so will try and add some positive and interesting now and then!

Going to be at Cowes on Thursday and Friday - but going to miss the weekend for the first time in many years. Actually do quite a lot of F18 catamaran sailing these days, and it is our National Championships at Weymouth this weekend.

Still waiting to see what my racing plans are - still hoping for Round Britain next year, also designing and having built some new 3C boats, but most likely for customers only.

Hopefully catch up soon - are you at Cowes this year?

Sadly, no. Will only be the second one I've missed in 14 years.

My daughter Amanda will be there though as my personal ambassador. :D
