... boats needed!

See below:

With the Cowes Grand Prix of the Sea a little over a month away we are looking for Marshalls and Officials to assist with the running of the event. The event will take place over the course of the August Bank Holiday weekend with a Round the Island Race running on the Friday. We already have many people involved but are still looking for Marshall Boats for all three days and a number of officials to ensure a professionally run event.

A full and detailed risk assessment has been prepared by P1 and the RYA which includes a comprehensive marshal plan which has been accepted by QHM, ABP and Cowes HM. The course has been agreed and the timetable finalised subject to final approval of the race approvals committee. As a direct result of this being completed well in advance of the event permission has been granted to run the Round the Island race on the Friday. This weekend remains the flagship powerboat racing event of the year and with more than 40 jet bikes assisting in the marshalling work and all buoy laying being carried out by commercial contractors together with two dedicated commercial tow boats being deployed we are confident that the organisation for 2007 will reflect the status of the event.

If you are interested in getting involved as a marshall boat or official during the event please contact the office (RYA)

All safety and marshal boats for the event will be eligible for the following:

Free moorings in Cowes
Fuel allowance paid for by the organisers. Money to be held by the RYA and payments to be made by us to all eligible boats

Access to parties on Saturday and Sunday night with live bands

FOC Ferry travel from the mainland Camping facilities at Northwood House

Free event promotional clothing

Sounds like a good deal.

I seem to remember the odd year doing safety at Cowes and getting free berthing and that was about it.

My favourite was in 2000 patrolling a section of the course on a very rough day getting soaked (especially going upwind) at 5 knots for about 4 hours. The safety officer forgot to call us in! Though Richard will deny this.

Last year was fun falling into 8ft gaps in the sea!

Wow, looks like a very full schedule.

Good to see the Round the Island race is back.
