Sadly! This will be a fast course looking at it, so if it's flat we'll be checking our speeds!

Is there a max speed in this class or just set the boat to the rules and let her run.

Indead there is.

Supersportclass

The maximum average speed for any boat in the class shall be 75mph,
measured over the whole race distance. Any boat exceeding this average will
receive a penalty of 30 seconds, which will be added to the total elapsed race
time. Any boat exceeding the average by more than 2 mph but less than
4mph measured over the whole race distance will receive a penalty of 1
minute added to the total elapsed time. Any boat exceeding the limit by more
4mph will be automatically disqualified.

Evolutionclass

The maximum average speed for any boat in the class shall be 87mph,
measured over the whole race distance. Any boat exceeding this average will
receive a penalty of 30 seconds, which will be added to the total elapsed race
time. Any boat exceeding the average by more than 2 mph but less than
4mph measured over the whole race distance will receive a penalty of 1

was this brought in to enable more participation by reducing the number of teams just able to buy the best equipment?

safety reasons, minor change sinds last year P1 where we had an average speed clocked on every lap. This new rule gives us more space and anticipation during the race. Next 2 fast racing we also need to race smart. Like we said before... to win a race, you have to finish first.;)

Dragon

was this brought in to enable more participation by reducing the number of teams just able to buy the best equipment?

Two reasons ..

We race under pleasure navigation rules under UIM and therefore do not require canopies ... so partly this is to keep the speed down for safety reasons. The power to weight ratio should be used to govern this, but today they use both the ratio and the average speed

If the courses are not long straights, or it is rough, this is not a problem anyway as we struggle to hit this as an average

The second reason, is as you say, to stop "cheque book racing".

OUTERLIMITS POWERBOATS, NIGEL HOOK AND LUCAS OIL TEAM UP FOR POWERBOAT P1 RACING!
Mike Fiore, President and Owner of Outerlimits Powerboats, has proudly announced his Offshore Racing Team's newest additions - a respected American motorsports sponsor, Lucas Oil, and a veteran American offshore racer, with a British accent, Nigel Hook.

The teams jelled as Hook searched for the winning situation to continue his ongoing seven-year sponsorship with Lucas Oil. He had explored the European Powerboat P1 circuit and was impressed by the professionalism, television visibility and competition in the organisation, but struggled to assemble the right team. "Racing in Powerboat P1 is a big commitment, so it only makes sense to do it with the best team, boat and support possible," Hook states. "With Outerlimits, there was no second choice - it is by far the best combination. I am honoured and excited to join the team and to bring the Lucas Oil sponsorship to the deal."

Since Outerlimits is new to the circuit, just making its debut in the season opener in Malta earlier in the month, the time was ideal to expand its team and its race set up. "As the only American manufacturer-sponsored team in Powerboat P1, we were looking for a sponsor to help with the tremendous expense of fielding a team in Europe," says Fiore. "With Nigel, we gain a World Champion driver, as well as a world-renown motorsports sponsor. It was a 'win-win' for everyone!"

While Hook will share the driver seat with fellow championship racer, Joe Sgro, his specialty is the endurance racing that Powerboat P1 features as one day in its two-day, two-race format, the other being a multi-lap sprint race. "Since I started racing in England in 1974, I have a great deal of experience in the rough waters of Europeand know that the Outerlimits SV-40 hull is well-suited for that," Hook states.

For Lucas Oil, the European circuit fits its growth trends and with an office in Northern Italy and one in Wales, the television coverage in over 70 countries overseas is a plus. Given its heavy sponsorship in NHRA, stock car and other motorsports, the company already has a strong presence on the SPEED Channel, where Powerboat P1 will air its racing coverage in November. Lucas Oil also plans to display models of its sponsored teams in the Indianapolis stadium, to which it recently purchased sponsorship rights. So, Colts fans may get the chance to see a Lucas Oil Outerlimits Powerboat at a future NFL game.

Hook will reunite with many former European competitors in Powerboat P1. His impressive racing resume includes induction into the APBA Hall of Champions in 1998, APBA/UIM World Championships in 1998 and 2006, World Speed Records in APBA/UIM events in 1993, 2000 and 2003, and three APBA National Championships in 1994, 1997 and 1998. He also took the APBA Pacific Offshore Championship nine times from 1989-2001.

"I'm very proud of my English ancestry, but also proud to be an American citizen, racing on the only American team in Europe!," jokes Hook, while Fiore adds, "We couldn't be happier with our race plans. We are truly bi-continental now!"

The team travels to Naples, Italy, for the Powerboat P1 Italian Grand Prix of the Sea over the weekend of 26th/27th May.

King of Shaves - A Cut Above The Rest In Naples!

King of Shaves, the Fountain-built boat of Briton's James Sheppard and Craig Wilson made a dream start to its life in Powerboat P1 with a debut win in the Evolution class of the Italian Grand Prix of the Sea. Taking the lead on the second lap from the Italian OSG boat of Giancarlo Cangiano and Giovanni Carpitella, the experienced pairing skimmed across the surface of the Bay of Naples, leaving the Italian boats Fainplast and OSG battling for the runners-up places with Austrian Wettpunkt and Lucas Oil - Outerlimits. By the halfway stage King of Shaves had built a commanding lead of over half a minute but that comfort zone was not to last as Wettpunkt.com of Hannes Bohinc, Miles Jennings and Ed Williams- Hawkes, found its rhythm after a relatively slow start. At the chequered flag the lead had been whittled down to less than ten seconds.

19 boats started the race, providing a dramatic spectacle for the large crowds packed along the shoreline who were treated to further drama with overtaking, retirements - including the third placed Metamarine craft of Fainplast- and a flip! This happened on lap five as OSG, battling for position with Wettpunkt, 'hooked' 360 degrees before flipping onto its side. It was a heart-stopping moment followed by a huge act of sportsmanship as both Wettpunkt and the American Lucas Oil - Outerlimits team stopped to monitor the situation and respond to any emergency that might unfold. Thankfully, both pilots emerged unscathed although wet and shaken and both Wettpunkt and Outerlimits were able to continue racing - Wettpunkt finishing second and Outerlimits third.

SuperSport, the highly competitive production class, once again proved to be intensely competitive and full of surprises. The dominant boat was Roscoli Hotels Roma with Neapolitan Angelo Tedeschi using his local knowledge to good effect, ably supported by Fabio Magnani and Ugo Pellegrino. The win has put Team Racing Project at the top of the World Championship standings. Behind them pre-event favourites ExtremeBoat suffered engine sensor problems and the FPT-powered Sunseeker with steering difficulties.

It was a fast, tough race that took its toll on many of the boats although accomplished performances from Buzzi Bullet, Chaudron and the Hustler of Team VoomVoom saw them amass valuable championship points, finishing in second, third and fourth place respectively.

Tomorrows shorter 'Sprint' race will take place on the same course, starting at 12:30pm local time, its outcome will determine final positions in the Powerboat P1 Italian Grand Prix of the Sea.

Good job Fountain team with the "king of shaves" took first place in evolution
and job well done in 2nd. place Mike and jacky in supersport.

respect goes 2 our good friends "Donzi" who started the second race after the disaster flip on saturday. And Wetpunkt.com & Outer limits to be gentlemen racers and stopped to check if they are both OK.

looks like our boat will be ready for the next race in Germany. Cant wait to do some testing. Pitty for my old teammate Nico with his LIMMI team (Fountain lightning 42), no points in Napels. Engine problems 1st race and crashed gearbox 2nd. race..... we keep repeating, to win a race , you have 2 finish!

Weather was pretty flat .. a bit of chop but nothing more, not really any wind.

All the breakdowns were simply mechanical!

Steering on Sunseeker, water problems on Outerlimits, OSG turned over (thankfully no-one hurt), we had engine sensor problems, steering wheel broke on Hustler, engine problems for Fainplast and Kiton etc. etc. ... lots of work in the pits on Saturday night :D

King of Shaves ran like a train!!! Wettpunkt went really well too

Still had one of the engines at 90% after Saturday and hit something in the water which very neatly removed one of our chine rails on the first lap ... bit of a handful after that!

What boat was this in a former life? It looks like it is long, 42? But as it is cut so low it might just appear this way.

Power?

So, is that left over from the marriage of Buzzi & Reggie a while back?

There's a ProVee boat over here, now owned by Howard Wretham that was badged as a Fountain that's really a Buzzi. Can't recall what US class it ran in originally, but it had a single normally aspirated big block of around 750hp, on a Trimax. Ben will know I'm sure.

Miles tops charts in rock and roll band

"They looked like an ageing rock band. As the crew of Wettpunkt.com talked COG - that's centre of gravity - with the long-haired, bejewelled Italian defending champions from OSG ahead of the opening P! Powerboat grand prix o the season in Malta, they could have been mistaken for a Status Quo tribute band."
